The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the prompt restoration of peace following a clash involving commercial tricycle (keke) riders and local youths at Evans Square, Ebute Metta, on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
According to a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, officers from the Adekunle Division responded swiftly at approximately 12:30 p.m. after receiving a distress call about the unrest. Police patrol teams, tactical squads, and other operatives were immediately deployed to the scene and were able to restore order in a timely manner.
One individual who sustained injuries during the fracas was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital. He is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition.
The Command confirmed that no fatalities occurred. However, three suspects were apprehended at the scene and are currently in police custody. They will be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.
To ensure a comprehensive inquiry, the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has taken over the case on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh. The investigation aims to uncover the root cause of the incident and bring all culpable parties to justice.
CP Jimoh also emphasized that the incident was not linked to any form of ethnic conflict or politically motivated violence. “The disturbance was incited by miscreants and hoodlums who seized the opportunity to cause chaos. It does not reflect any ethnic tension or insecurity in Lagos State,” he affirmed.
The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining peace and order across the state. Residents and visitors are encouraged to carry on with their lawful activities without fear of harassment or intimidation.
The Command also urged parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards against involvement in actions that could disturb public peace.
