The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, has said that promotion in the Nigeria Police Force should not be viewed merely as recognition of past achievements, but as a call to greater responsibility, discipline, and sacrifice.
Argungu, represented by Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations of the Commission, gave the charge on Thursday, September 25, 2025, during a grand reception and special commendation session organised by the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in honour of newly promoted senior police officers.
The PSC Chairman reminded the officers that promotion marks a new beginning in service rather than an end, stressing that the challenges before the Nigeria Police are enormous. He listed violent crimes, insurgency, cybercrime, and the complex demands of democratic policing as areas that require renewed commitment and professionalism.
“The nation will continue to look up to you to demonstrate leadership, integrity, and professionalism at all times,” Argungu said, urging the officers to wear their new ranks with humility and carry out their duties with vigour.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to a merit-driven promotion process anchored on transparency and due process. According to him, such an approach is essential to inspire confidence, boost morale, and reposition the police for optimum performance.
In his remarks to the PCRC, Argungu expressed gratitude for the group’s consistent support to both the Commission and the police. He described the partnership as a testimony to the fact that security is a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
“We must continue to build bridges of trust and collaboration between the police and the communities,” he said.
The PSC Chairman further reminded the promotees of the weight of their new responsibilities, noting that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”
The reception, attended by stakeholders in the security sector and community leaders, highlighted the crucial role of community-police partnerships in strengthening public trust and improving security across the country.
