In a landmark move to enhance professional growth within the Lagos State civil service, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the recognition of the Diploma in Local Government Administration, awarded jointly by Lagos State University (LASU) and the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), for career advancement to Grade Level 12.
The announcement was made during a working visit to Somolu Local Government by the Chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Kamal Ayinde Bayewu.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Olusegun Akinyemi, “This approval reflects the administration’s commitment to merit-based progression and staff welfare. Diploma holders now have a clear pathway to ascend to Level 12, eliminating long-standing stagnation in career development.”
Akinyemi noted that the Commission also addressed concerns from retirees about delayed benefit processing. “Many delays are due to failure to submit required service documents before retirement. All personnel are urged to ensure timely compliance to avoid complications,” the statement said.
Hon. Bayewu also advised management staff to actively mentor and train junior officers to build a stronger, future-ready workforce.
During the visit, the Commission commended Somolu Local Government for creating a conducive work environment. Akinyemi’s statement highlighted the efforts of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Abdul-Hammed Salawu “Dullar,” represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Dele Afolabi. Commendable initiatives include the establishment of a staff clinic, canteen, regular training sessions, staff buses, housing allowances, and festive bonuses.
The Commission Chairman further emphasized health as a priority, stating that proof of medical screening—covering diabetes, hypertension, malaria, and other silent illnesses—will be required before monthly staff verification can be approved. “Your health must come first,” he added.
Present during the visit were members of the Commission, including Hon. Hakeem Adisa Bamgbola (Lagos Division), Hon. Taofik Adaranijo (Ikeja Division), Hon. Ahmed Seriki (Epe Division), as well as top officials from Somolu Local Government and various departments within the Commission.
