Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to human capital development, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu underscoring the transformative power of coaching in driving personal, organizational, and national progress.
Speaking at the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Nigeria Chapter’s International Coaching Week event, the Governor emphasized that coaching plays a critical role in unlocking human potential, enhancing productivity, and fostering innovation across sectors.
Represented by the deputy chief of staff, Mr. Samuel Egube, Governor Sanwo-Olu said whether in the boardroom, the classroom or the public sector, coaching empowers people to make meaningful changes that benefit not just themselves, but the communities and institutions they serve.
He noted that coaching is more than a personal development tool—it is a key driver of economic growth. By improving communication, problem-solving and team collaboration, coaching enables organizations to thrive and individuals to reach their full potential.
“Lagos is Nigeria’s best chance to succeed,” the Governor stated. “And we will continue to support practices like coaching that build strong, confident leaders ready to move our state and nation forward.”
In his remarks, President of the ICF Nigeria Chapter, Akanimo Ekong, echoed the Governor’s sentiment, describing coaching as a vital tool for mindset transformation, especially among leadership ranks.
Ekong said coaching challenges traditional hierarchies and helps senior executives remain open to fresh insights, including those from younger colleagues.
“Many seasoned leaders often ask, ‘Why do I need a coach?’ But even Bill Gates said everyone needs a coach,” he noted.
“We’re not here to run your business for you. Coaching simply helps leaders think better, treat their teams better, and take their organizations to the next level.”
He stressed that the impact of coaching reaches far beyond individual growth—it improves mental health, nurtures resilience, and builds leadership capacities that fuel national development.
The event, which marked the ICF Nigeria Chapter’s 10th anniversary of coaching impact, brought together professionals from various sectors to celebrate the role of coaching in building a forward-thinking, high-performing workforce.
