A tragic road accident at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway has claimed the lives of six people, while nine others were rescued with varying degrees of injuries, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
According to LASTMA, the crash involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck transporting wooden planks and a white commercial bus (AKD 336 YD). Preliminary investigations by security operatives revealed that excessive speeding and reckless driving caused the accident.
The fatalities included two adult males, three adult females, and one minor, while the injured survivors, three males and six females were immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital for emergency treatment. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the FMC morgue for identification by family members.
Four other passengers escaped the wreckage unhurt.
LASTMA said its rescue unit, supported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), ensured swift evacuation of victims and quick restoration of order at the accident scene.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and condemned reckless motoring practices on Lagos roads.
“Speed thrills, but ultimately kills,” Bakare-Oki said, urging motorists to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving to prevent avoidable tragedies.
He stressed that road crashes, particularly during the Ember Months, are not caused by mystical forces but by human recklessness and poor judgment.
Bakare-Oki also commended the collaborative efforts of emergency responders, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation between enforcement agencies and road users.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while maintaining a safe and orderly traffic environment across Lagos State.
