Tertiary institutions benefiting from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) have been urged to ensure proper maintenance and judicious use of completed projects to maximize public investment and enhance educational development across the country.
This call was made by Hon. Sunday Adepoju, the South-West representative on the TETFUND Board of Trustees, during an inspection visit to the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
Hon. Adepoju emphasized that TETFUND, which is funded through taxpayer money, has significantly contributed to the provision of vital infrastructure across Nigerian tertiary institutions. He noted that the proper upkeep of these facilities is crucial to ensuring they continue to serve both current and future generations of students.
“The Federal Government has made substantial investments in infrastructure to improve teaching and learning in our tertiary institutions,” he stated. “It is therefore the responsibility of school managements, staff, and students to ensure these facilities are well maintained and used effectively.”
Following the tour of several TETFUND-sponsored projects within Yaba College of Technology, Hon. Adepoju expressed satisfaction with the state of the facilities, adding that no project appeared to be abandoned. He praised the college’s management for providing the necessary support to the contractors who executed the projects.
He also challenged the institution to increase its focus on groundbreaking research initiatives that can address national challenges and support Nigeria’s economic development.
Responding, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Adedotun Abdul, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and TETFUND for their continued support. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining the provided infrastructure and delivering high-quality, technology-driven education.
“As Nigeria’s first higher institution, we remain committed to impacting students with relevant technological knowledge that can transform society and support national development,” he said.
Projects inspected by the TETFUND Board at the college included the School of Management and Business Studies, a newly commissioned Digital Academy and Workplace Learning Hub, and an ICT Workplace Station established at the Computer Village in Ikeja.
