The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three masqueraders involved in a violent assault on residents during a cultural event in Nsukka, an incident that sparked public outrage after a video of the attack went viral on social media.
According to an official statement issued by the Command, the suspects were apprehended on June 23, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m. by officers from the Nsukka Urban Division, working in collaboration with concerned members of the community.
The arrests stem from a disturbing incident that occurred on June 22, during the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration in Nsukka. The masqueraders, now in custody, along with others still at large, allegedly used the cultural festivities as a pretext to assault innocent members of the public, inflicting bodily harm. One of the victims reportedly sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised.
The statement revealed that the masqueraders initially resisted arrest and fled the scene. However, with assistance from local residents, police successfully identified and apprehended three of the perpetrators.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter and assured that all involved will face the full weight of the law. He condemned the misuse of traditional practices for criminal purposes, stating:
“Masquerade celebrations are sacred cultural expressions. It is unacceptable for anyone to exploit them to harm others.”
CP Giwa further warned that the Police Command would not tolerate any abuse of cultural traditions to commit crimes or incite unrest.
The Command encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any acts of violence or intimidation disguised as cultural expression, promising continued collaboration with communities to uphold public safety.
