President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the critical role of Nigeria’s traditional institutions in national development, calling for stronger collaboration between the government and royal leadership to enhance policy implementation and improve citizens’ welfare.
The President made these remarks on Thursday in Abuja while receiving the newly installed 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Abdulhakeem Owoade I, along with his wife, Olori Abiwumi, and a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State.
Congratulating the monarch on his ascension, Tinubu described the occasion as a “historic moment” marked by divine providence and the will of the people.
“Your ascendancy to the throne of your fathers is the will of God and the desire of your people,” the President said. “I admire your foresight for development, your humility, and your commitment to preserving the traditions of your people.”
He praised the Alaafin’s disciplined leadership and cultural advocacy, even while living abroad, and lauded the Oyo Traditional Council for facilitating a smooth transition following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022.
The President emphasized that his administration remains committed to working with the traditional institution to foster peace, inclusivity, and national progress. He highlighted education and healthcare as top priorities, along with the promotion of cultural values.
“The peace and stability of our nation require inclusiveness,” he said. “This job cannot be done alone. We must unite to build a prosperous Nigeria. Our doors are open for constructive participation.”
President Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of Oyo sons serving in his administration, including Ambassador Victor Adeleke, State Chief of Protocol, and Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, his Aide-de-Camp. He noted that Yusuf, the king-designate of Ilemonaland in Kwara State, traces his ancestry to the Oyo Kingdom.
In his remarks, the Alaafin expressed gratitude for the warm reception, describing the President as a leader of courage, compassion, and vision. He said the visit represented not only tradition but also a call for renewed national unity and progress.
“Today, I speak not only as a custodian of tradition but as a voice for my people. We are honoured by this audience, which reflects your respect for our institution and our history,” Oba Owoade said.
“Nigeria looks up to you for restoration—for a vision rooted in justice, equity, and inclusive progress. Oyo is ready. The Yoruba are ready. Nigerians are ready.”
The monarch commended the President’s efforts in economic reforms, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and national security, adding that true transformation requires a partnership between modern governance and traditional wisdom.
“National transformation is not the job of government alone. It happens when ancient wisdom meets modern leadership. When institutions, old and new, work together,” he concluded.
