The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two key suspects linked to the brutal murder of a young woman from Nasarawa State, whose charred body was discovered on May 24, 2025, in the Gangare slum near the canal behind the Mile 12 Market.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had been residing in the slum with relatives from the northern region. While her exact occupation remains unknown, police have confirmed that she was not of Yoruba descent, countering earlier misinformation circulating on social media.
The investigation so far points to a premeditated crime driven by personal motives. The victim’s estranged boyfriend, who is currently at large, allegedly conspired with accomplices to coerce her into resuming a broken relationship. When she refused, the suspects reportedly abducted, attacked, and murdered her before setting her remains ablaze.
“There is no evidence to support claims of blasphemy as a motive. This was a calculated act of conspiracy and murder, which should be unequivocally condemned,” the police spokesperson stated.
Two suspects directly implicated in the attack are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and are cooperating with detectives. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the prime suspect—the victim’s former partner—and others still at large.
The Command emphasized that the situation in Mile 12 has been brought under control, with no credible threats of ethnic tension or reprisal attacks in the area. Residents are urged to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.
The public is also advised to refrain from spreading unverified or inflammatory information that could incite panic or unrest.
“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to the safety and security of all residents. We will ensure a thorough and discreet investigation leading to the prosecution of all those involved,” Hundeyin assured.
