Tensions Simmer Amidst Mixed Outcomes as APC Primaries Hold in Lagos

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is currently conducting its local government primaries ahead of the July 12 council elections, with the process unfolding unevenly across various parts of the state.

While party leaders have touted peaceful consensus arrangements in certain Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), multiple reports from within the party paint a more complex and often contentious picture.

Consensus or Imposition?

In places like Oshodi-Isolo LGA, as well as Iba, Ijede, Lekki, and Otto Awori LCDAs, APC leaders claim that chairmanship and councillorship candidates emerged through a smooth consensus process. However, grassroots members and some aspirants have challenged these claims, alleging that many of these “consensus” outcomes were pre-arranged by party elites without adequate consultation.

“We were told there was consensus, but no meeting was held with us,” said a disgruntled aspirant from Lagos Mainland. “This is not consensus, it’s imposition.”

Voting Amid Tight Security

In areas where consensus could not be reached, delegates gathered at the party secretariat in Ikeja to vote under a heavy security presence. Armed personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, DSS, and LASTMA were deployed to prevent disruptions, a measure seen by some as necessary, but by others as a sign of rising internal tension.

Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat addressed delegates, promising a free and credible process. But the presence of top officials has done little to quell suspicions of behind-the-scenes maneuvering.

Factionalism and Confusion in Several LGAs

In LGAs like Lagos Mainland and Yaba, the situation has been particularly chaotic. Conflicting lists of “consensus” candidates emerged, allegedly from rival party factions. This has led to confusion, resentment, and in some instances, open revolt among members who feel marginalized.

“These primaries have only deepened the cracks within Lagos APC,” a party source told reporters. “There’s growing frustration among loyal members who feel the process has been hijacked.”

Outlook Ahead of July Elections

As the primaries progress, the APC in Lagos faces a growing crisis of confidence within its ranks. While leadership insists the process is in line with democratic norms, the reality on the ground suggests widespread dissatisfaction, and the potential for internal divisions to escalate ahead of the general council elections.
