The House of Representatives has passed a bill for second reading that seeks to make the teaching and learning of local languages compulsory in Nigerian primary schools.
The bill, jointly sponsored by Hon. Bello Ambarura, who represents Illela Gwadabawa Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, and the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, proposes the mandatory study of indigenous languages from Primary One to Primary Three.
According to the sponsors, the legislation aims to strengthen the preservation of Nigeria’s diverse linguistic heritage while enhancing learning comprehension among young pupils by using languages they understand.
Lawmakers expressed support for the proposal during debate, highlighting the importance of cultural identity and early childhood education rooted in familiar languages.
With the bill now past second reading, it has been forwarded to the relevant House committees for further consideration and legislative action.
