The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, is set to commence postgraduate degree programmes following a resource verification exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The verification exercise was carried out by a high-level NUC team led by Maxwell Gidado alongside 17 other officials as part of the accreditation requirements for the proposed postgraduate programmes.
The exercise was hosted by the Commandant of the academy, Patrick Atayero, who described the development as a major step toward strengthening police education and leadership development in Nigeria.
According to Atayero, the introduction of postgraduate studies is aimed at equipping officers with advanced knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and leadership skills required to address modern policing and security challenges.
He explained that the initiative goes beyond expanding academic offerings and is intended to reposition the academy as a centre for professional excellence, research, and advanced security studies.
The commandant further noted that the programme aligns with the reform vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which places emphasis on professionalism, continuous learning, and capacity development within the police force.
Officials of both the academy and the NUC expressed confidence that the proposed postgraduate programmes would meet required academic standards and contribute meaningfully to national security and public service delivery.
The academy stated that the programmes are expected to provide rigorous and credible training tailored to contemporary policing realities and emerging security concerns.
With the latest development, the Nigeria Police Academy is seeking to expand its role beyond tactical and paramilitary training into advanced academic research and professional development in policing and security management.
