Experts from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, academia, business, and security sectors have called on the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to adopt more effective strategies for safeguarding mining sites across the state.
This call to action was made during the 5th edition of the Lagos NSCDC Bi-Monthly PR Clinic, themed “Sustainable Mining and Environmental Management in Nigeria: The Role of Government, NSCDC, and Stakeholders.” The event, held virtually on Thursday, May 8, 2025, brought together local and international professionals from relevant sectors to share insights on the future of mining in Nigeria.
Notable speakers included Engr. Silas S. G., Federal Mines Officer for Lagos State; Dr. Wasiu Balogun, an energy and maritime security expert and Coordinator of the Master of Arts Program at Lagos State University; and Mr. Abiodun Oseni, a U.S. Army veteran. Retired Assistant Commandant General David Bille and other key stakeholders also contributed during the interactive session.
In his opening remarks, Lagos NSCDC Commandant Mr. Adedotun Keshinro emphasized the importance of the clinic in deepening stakeholder understanding of the mining sector and enhancing their intellectual capacity to support sustainable practices.
Engr. Silas underscored the critical role of environmental protection in mining operations and called for increased government support to enable the NSCDC to fulfill its mandate effectively.
Dr. Balogun highlighted the broader implications of unsustainable mining practices, noting that effective regulation requires coordinated efforts across agencies and industry stakeholders. “Sustainable mining meets the needs of the present without compromising the future,” he said, stressing the urgency of tackling crimes in the sector with a unified approach.
Mr. Oseni commended the NSCDC for its commitment to enforcing mining regulations but urged the Corps to increase collaboration with other regulatory bodies and local communities. He also advocated for better welfare, continuous training, and improved support for personnel tasked with securing mining assets.
The event was hosted by Superintendent of Corps Oluwaseun Abolurin, Public Relations Officer of the Lagos Command. Participants joined from across Nigeria and abroad, contributing to a robust discussion on the path forward for the mining industry and its regulation.
