Over 60 schools across Kano State participated in AGILE Week 2025, a week-long celebration of academic, creative, and sporting talent among adolescent girls. Organized under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), the event featured competitions in debates, spelling bees, poetry, essay writing, short stories, painting, content creation, and climate change-themed projects, alongside volleyball and basketball matches.
Speaking at the event, Kano State AGILE Coordinator, Malam Mujjitapha Aminu, said AGILE Week is a flagship program designed to showcase the talents and intellectual potential of adolescent girls. He emphasized that the inclusion of sports in the activities was intentional, aimed at promoting teamwork, self-confidence, and healthy competition among students.
He also noted that what started as a program in seven states has now expanded to 18–21 states across the country. According to him, the winners from the Kano State competitions will represent the state at the national level, where they are expected to compete with peers from other participating states.
Among the winning schools, Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Dala, excelled in content creation, while GSTC, Jaoji, emerged best in short story writing. First Lady College topped the poetry category, and Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Chiranci, won the essay writing competition. Mario Tijjani Girls College took first place in the climate change contest, and Government Technical College, Kano, led in digital literacy.
In sports, Army Day Secondary School won the girls’ volleyball competition, Ahmadiyya College took the boys’ volleyball trophy, and Government Girls College, Dala, claimed victory in the girls’ basketball category.
Some of the students, including Husna Adam, Maryam Sani, Mariya Bashir, and Umar Garba, expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to showcase their talents. They pledged to work hard as they prepare to represent Kano State at the national level.
The event drew a large turnout and was attended by dignitaries from the Kano Emirate Council, School-Based Management Committees (SBMC), K-SAFE, education experts, students, and top government officials, all showing support for the AGILE initiative’s role in empowering girls through education and skills development.
