The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, representing Orhionmwon East Constituency, as the new Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
His election followed the resignation of Hon. Maria Edeko, who stepped down earlier on Monday, citing the need for equity, fairness, and political balance within the legislature.
Hon. Atu’s nomination was moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian. The motion was unanimously adopted by all members present.
In his acceptance remarks, the newly elected deputy speaker expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to uphold the dignity of the office and contribute meaningfully to the legislative progress of the state.
“I am deeply humbled by this honour and I assure you that I will not betray the trust placed in me,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Hon. Maria Edeko announced her voluntary resignation from the position. She explained that with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) now in the minority in the House, her exit would promote inclusivity and a balanced representation of the state’s constituencies.
“I resigned to allow for fairness and equity among the political blocs in the Assembly,” Edeko stated. She also thanked her party and constituents for their continued support.
Following her resignation, several lawmakers took turns to commend Hon. Edeko for her dedicated service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public good during her time as Deputy Speaker.
Her leadership, they said, will be remembered for its professionalism, legislative acumen, and a deep sense of responsibility.
With this development, the Edo State House of Assembly moves forward under a renewed leadership structure as it continues its legislative duties.
