The South-East Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the outright cancellation of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), citing widespread irregularities and what they described as a national embarrassment.
In a statement signed by the Caucus leader, Hon. Igariwey Iduma Enwo, who represents Afikpo North/Afikpo South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, the lawmakers urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to fix a new date for the examination across the country.
The Caucus further called for the immediate suspension of key officials responsible for JAMB’s digital infrastructure and examination logistics. They argued that such actions are necessary to restore credibility to the examination process.
While acknowledging the personal integrity of the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the group stated that leadership must come with accountability. “The Registrar of JAMB is said to be a good man, but then, leadership must carry consequences,” the statement read. “We therefore call on the Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, to do the needful by resigning his appointment. This would allow for a thorough investigation and remediation of the root causes of this national shame. That’s the way to go in any civilised democracy, and we expect no less.”
The lawmakers emphasized that public apologies and image management efforts are insufficient to address the damage caused. They called for comprehensive reforms to restore public trust in JAMB and other national examination bodies.
