As the Muslim community prepares for Eid-el-Adha, ram prices across major markets in Kebbi State have remained stable and relatively affordable—an encouraging development amid nationwide concerns over rising costs of living.
A market assessment conducted over the weekend in key livestock hubs such as Ambursa, Argungu, and Dodoru reveals that rams are currently selling between ₦100,000 and ₦450,000. Sheep range from ₦70,000 to ₦250,000, while goats are priced between ₦50,000 and ₦250,000, depending on size, breed, and overall condition.
Livestock traders in these markets say this year’s prices are comparatively lower than in 2024. Malam Musa Ambursa, a long-time seller in the Ambursa market, attributed the stability to increased livestock availability and more favorable transportation conditions this season.
“Last year, by this time, prices had already surged. This year, the supply is better, and the demand hasn’t peaked yet,” he said. “But once salaries are paid and Eid draws closer, we expect prices to rise.”
Another trader, Malam Shehu Adamu, echoed this view, advising prospective buyers to make purchases early to avoid anticipated last-minute price hikes.
Many buyers expressed satisfaction with the current price trend. “Compared to what we saw last year, the prices are better now,” said Usman Bello, a civil servant shopping in Argungu. “Hopefully, things won’t escalate too much in the final week.”
Eid-el-Adha, expected to be observed around June 10, 2025, is marked by the ritual slaughter of animals—particularly rams—in honor of the Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and sacrifice. With just under two weeks remaining, both traders and customers are bracing for the typical surge in demand as the date draws closer.
Market watchers advise buyers to act promptly, as the combination of increased demand and salary disbursements may drive prices upward in the final days before the celebration.
