IGP Backs Maritime Security Push to Unlock Nigeria’s Blue Economy Potential

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to bolstering security in support of Nigeria’s growing marine and blue economy sector.

He made this assurance on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, during a courtesy visit by the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, Esq, MON, at the IGP Smart Conference Room, Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The meeting was attended by members of the Force Management Team and other senior police officers.

During the visit, Dr. Akutah commended the IGP for the warm reception and lauded the longstanding synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. He emphasized the critical support provided by the Police in the Council’s regulatory and enforcement duties, particularly the implementation of the Nigerian Port Process Manual, which has led to increased transparency and improved operational efficiency along port corridors.

He called for deeper collaboration with the Police in areas such as compliance enforcement, surveillance, and logistical support for the Council’s monitoring operations nationwide.

In response, the IGP acknowledged the strategic role of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in driving economic activities through Nigeria’s ports and reaffirmed the Force’s readiness to provide robust security support. He assured the Council of continued cooperation, particularly through enhanced collaboration with joint task teams operating within port environments and across maritime corridors.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized that securing Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure is pivotal to the broader goals of national development and economic diversification, particularly under the emerging blue economy framework.

He further reiterated the Force’s commitment to fostering impactful partnerships with key stakeholders across both public and private sectors, in line with its mission to safeguard public safety, strengthen national security, and promote institutional efficiency.

The strategic engagement underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s proactive approach to supporting government efforts in optimizing the potential of the marine and blue economy for sustainable growth and national prosperity.
