Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, has emphasized that the strength of democracy lies in active citizen participation, not just in being heard but in being fully involved in governance.
He made this assertion during the second edition of the Citizens’ Roundtable with the Leadership of the House of Representatives, held in Abuja as part of the commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Speaker lauded the roundtable as a vital platform for dialogue, mutual learning, and a renewed commitment to people-centered leadership.
“Democracy is strongest when the people are not only heard but fully involved,” Abbas said. “This event has shown that the voices of citizens enrich legislative deliberations and inspire a more inclusive, accountable, and responsive government.”
Describing the forum as a space for genuine civic engagement, Dr. Abbas stressed that the roundtable marked not an end, but a continuation of the House’s commitment to participatory governance. He reiterated that citizen input is at the heart of the 10th House’s Legislative Agenda.
“We are building a parliament that works with the people, not just for them. We are committed to listening, learning, and taking action on the issues that matter most to Nigerians,” he said.
He praised the depth of the discourse, the clarity of citizen perspectives, and the passion displayed throughout the event, adding that such engagement reminds parliamentarians of the dignity of public service and their shared responsibility in strengthening democracy.
The event also served as a mid-term reflection point for the 10th National Assembly. In his welcome remarks, Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere—represented by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda—underscored the importance of such interactions, noting that it demonstrates the House’s resolve to remain accountable and connected to the people.
“This gathering allows us to assess our progress, reconnect with our constituents, and reaffirm our commitment to their priorities and the national interest,” he said.
The Citizens’ Roundtable drew wide participation, including members of the Federal Executive Council, former Speakers, civil society groups, human rights advocates, and various stakeholder organizations.
The event highlighted growing efforts by the National Assembly to institutionalize open governance and citizen engagement as core tenets of legislative operations.
