The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has condemned a fatal road crash that occurred over the weekend at Origan, Oko-Afo, along the Badagry Expressway, involving a tricycle and a Mercedes-Benz SUV reportedly driving against traffic.
According to preliminary investigations, the SUV—bearing a customized plate “OSUNFNKE”—was travelling against the designated flow of traffic from Ile-Epo towards Oko-Afo when it collided head-on with a commercial tricycle (Keke Marwa) registered as MUS 716 QM.
The tricycle operator suffered severe injuries, including a dislocated knee, and was confirmed dead at the scene. Eyewitnesses and officials confirmed that the SUV driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving behind both the wrecked car and the deceased victim.
LASTMA personnel arrived promptly to manage the situation, securing the crash site and coordinating with the Morogbo Division of the Nigeria Police Force, who have taken over the case. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) transported the victim’s body to the Badagry General Hospital morgue, while both vehicles were towed and handed over to the police for further investigation.
In a statement, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency decried the driver’s reckless disregard for traffic regulations, labelling it a “blatant affront to public safety and a gross violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.”
“This tragic and avoidable loss of life underscores the deadly consequences of impunity on our roads,” Bakare-Oki said. “Despite ongoing education and enforcement, some motorists continue to defy traffic laws with dangerous confidence.”
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to road safety and strict enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly against one-way driving, which remains a major cause of fatal accidents in Lagos.
“This incident could have been entirely prevented had the driver adhered to directional signage. We urge all road users to obey traffic laws, respect life, and drive responsibly,” he added.
The agency extended condolences to the family of the deceased tricycle operator and vowed to support police efforts in ensuring the fugitive driver is brought to justice.
LASTMA also warned motorists to desist from acts that endanger lives and disrupt public order, noting that traffic laws are not mere guidelines but essential rules designed to protect all road users.
