In a bid to enhance infrastructure and public safety, Hon. Ogunkelu Oluwadahunsi Sylvester Sketel, the representative of Epe Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, has facilitated the installation of solar-powered streetlights along Ajegunle Road in Ilara Kingdom, Ward H1.
Ajegunle Road is a key access route within Ilara, a historic town in the Eredo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. The road connects several rural and semi-urban communities, making it a vital corridor for local trade, schooling, and transportation. However, over the years, residents have expressed concerns about the poor lighting conditions, especially at night, which have posed risks to commuters and increased vulnerability to criminal activity.
The newly installed solar streetlights are expected to improve nighttime visibility, deter criminal activities, and support local economic and social activities after dark. The use of solar energy also reflects a growing shift towards renewable and cost-effective infrastructure in Lagos State’s rural development policy.
Hon. Ogunkelu, popularly known as Sketel, has consistently advocated for improved infrastructure, rural electrification, and youth empowerment since assuming office in 2019. This latest intervention aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to decentralize development and ensure that semi-urban and rural communities benefit from modern amenities.
Constituents have lauded the project as evidence of the lawmaker’s commitment to tangible and impactful governance.
“This streetlight project will go a long way in improving security and ease of movement in our community,” a local resident said.
Hon. Sketel remains a prominent voice in the Lagos State House of Assembly, where he serves on key committees and is known for his grassroots engagement and accessibility.
This initiative marks another milestone in his efforts to bridge the development gap in Epe Division and to position Ilara and surrounding communities for sustainable growth.
