The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has approved an intensive leadership and capacity-building programme for senior officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) as part of efforts to strengthen traffic management and align the agency with international best practices.
The five-day training programme, which began today in Oshodi, is designed for 50 zonal heads and 32 other senior officers, making up a total of 82 principal officers in the agency’s command structure. This initiative follows the governor’s earlier directive in early 2025 that facilitated the training and retraining of over 3,000 frontline LASTMA operatives within the past eight months.
According to the state government, the retraining aims to equip LASTMA’s leadership with advanced managerial skills, ethical leadership principles, and modern traffic management strategies to effectively tackle the evolving traffic challenges in Lagos.
Declaring the programme open, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the governor for what he described as a “strategic and invaluable investment” in the professional development of the agency. He said the training would enhance operational efficiency and improve public trust in LASTMA’s ability to deliver on its mandate.
“The modules cover areas such as job description and performance management, organisational leadership, incident management, conflict resolution with emotional intelligence, effective communication, stress and health management, and ethical standards,” Bakare-Oki said.
Also speaking, Director of Training and Human Capacity Development, Mr. Akinpelu Ayuba, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for prioritizing the growth of human capital within the agency. He stressed that continuous training and retraining are key to achieving better traffic management outcomes and safer roads across Lagos.
Ayuba also urged motorists to remain law-abiding, courteous, and cooperative with LASTMA officials, emphasizing that collective responsibility is crucial in ensuring a safer and more orderly traffic environment.
