The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of one passenger and serious injuries sustained by six others in a fatal crash that occurred early Sunday, yesterday, around the Majidun–Ogolonto axis of Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
According to an official statement, the accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus (EPE 494 XM) reportedly conveying passengers to an event in Ogijo, and a stationary tipper truck parked by the roadside to purchase diesel. Preliminary findings revealed that the commercial bus suffered brake failure while travelling at high speed, causing the driver to lose control and crash into the parked truck.
The impact claimed the life of an adult female passenger on the spot, while five other women and one man suffered severe injuries. The injured victims were taken to Benic Special Hospital, while the deceased was moved by security operatives to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for official procedures.
LASTMA disclosed that its operatives immediately launched a pursuit and successfully arrested the tipper driver who attempted to flee the scene. The commercial bus driver was also taken into custody, and both have been handed over to the police at Ipakodo Division for further investigation. The agency later cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow toward Ikorodu Garage.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow, offered condolences to the bereaved family, and prayed for the swift recovery of surviving victims. He warned motorists against speeding, stressing that it reduces the ability to react to emergencies or mechanical failure.
