The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects before a Magistrate Court in Asaba over alleged involvement in violent disturbances, public nuisance, and other offences recorded during New Year’s Eve security operations in the state capital.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday while reacting to reports circulating in parts of the media, which it described as misleading and sensational.
According to the Police, the arrests were made at different locations across Asaba during intensified security patrols conducted on December 31, 2025, and the early hours of January 1, 2026. The suspects were apprehended for offences ranging from violent conduct and public nuisance to drug-related activities and actions capable of breaching public peace.
Following the completion of preliminary investigations, Police said 33 suspects were found to have prima facie cases against them and were subsequently charged to court. They were arraigned before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba, where three of the suspects were remanded in custody, while the remaining defendants were granted bail pending the continuation of prosecution.
The Command also dismissed claims circulating online that a particular individual was arrested while worshipping in church or rearrested over alleged media interaction. Police clarified that the suspect in question was arrested alongside two others inside a Mercedes Benz GLK vehicle, which was reportedly parked on a close street opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba.
Police alleged that the trio were in the process of purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected drug dealer at the time of arrest. The suspects and the alleged dealer were taken into custody, and incriminating exhibits were reportedly recovered from the scene.
The Command further explained that one of the suspects, identified as a member of a sister security agency, was granted bail and released to his institution pending arraignment. According to Police, this decision was based on the assurance that his appearance in court could be secured through his agency.
Emphasising due process, the Police noted that the grant of bail does not amount to an end to investigation or imply innocence, stressing that investigations and prosecution remain ongoing.
The Delta State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard what it described as misinformation and sensational reporting, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the rule of law.
Police assured residents of Delta State that the Command remains focused on its constitutional responsibility of maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
