The Lagos State Health District III has sensitised stakeholders in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area on the importance of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine for children aged 9 to 15 months, ahead of its integration into the state’s routine immunisation schedule and a planned statewide vaccination campaign.
The stakeholders’ meeting, held at the Ibeju-Lekki Council Secretariat, was led by the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, and brought together community leaders, health workers, parents, and other relevant stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Adeleke highlighted the public health risks posed by measles and rubella, describing them as highly contagious viral diseases capable of causing severe complications such as blindness, brain damage, deafness, birth defects, and death. She urged parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive the vaccine, stressing that the MR vaccine is safe, effective, and will be administered free of charge at all government health facilities.
Dr. Adeleke explained that the sensitisation was part of efforts to prepare communities for the statewide rollout of the MR vaccine and to address misconceptions that often hinder immunisation uptake.
The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Issa Maruf Olayinka, expressed the council’s full support for the Lagos State Measles-Rubella sensitisation and immunisation campaign.
In a statement delivered on behalf of the chairman, Mr. Olayinka described the vaccination campaign as a critical, life-saving intervention aimed at protecting children from preventable diseases that could lead to pneumonia, blindness, brain damage, and congenital rubella syndrome in newborns.
He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders across Ibeju-Lekki to ensure that children within the eligible age bracket are presented at designated vaccination points during the campaign.
“The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government is fully committed to this initiative. We call on all residents to take advantage of this free and safe vaccination exercise to secure the future health of our children and build a healthier community,” the statement said.
The sensitisation also highlighted the Lagos State Government’s planned Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign scheduled to run from January 20 to January 31, 2026, with mop-up activities to follow.
Other officials present at the event included the Medical Officer of Health, Ibeju-Lekki, Dr. (Mrs.) Agboola, the Health Education Officer, Mrs. Ekemin Adebukola, and Dr. Adenike, who provided detailed information on the vaccine schedule, administration process, and long-term benefits.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to reducing child morbidity and mortality through sustained immunisation programmes and community engagement.
