The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a tragic incident that led to the death of a police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, during an altercation involving a fellow officer in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m. at the Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt, where Inspector Sani and another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda both attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty alongside military personnel.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, attached to 17 PMF and on special duty at Intels, Onne, allegedly shot the two officers, hitting them in the head and neck regions. The injured officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for urgent medical attention. Inspector Sani, however, succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is currently receiving treatment. The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident to fully ascertain the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The suspect has been taken into custody and is expected to undergo an Orderly Room Trial before being charged to court for prosecution.
The Commissioner also cautioned officers on the responsible handling of firearms, stressing that the use of weapons while on duty carries serious obligations and must be approached with utmost professionalism to safeguard lives and prevent avoidable tragedies.
