Police Foil Kidnap Attempt in Port Harcourt, Arrest Suspect, Recover AK-47 Rifles

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State have foiled a kidnap attempt in Port Harcourt, arresting a suspected gang member and recovering two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and live ammunition during a coordinated operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of March 20, when armed men reportedly stormed a residence on Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area of Port Harcourt, attempting to abduct a 35-year-old resident identified as Fadi Nasser. The attackers were said to have opened fire during the operation, but the victim escaped unharmed, prompting a swift police response.
Police investigations gathered momentum after a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the suspects was recovered at the scene. Acting on the lead, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit tracked the device using technical intelligence, leading to the arrest of one Joseph Abibo, who is alleged to be a member of the kidnapping syndicate.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly provided information that led police to the group’s hideout. However, operatives came under heavy gunfire on arrival, triggering a gun battle between the police and the suspects.
Police sources said the operatives overpowered the gang during the exchange, forcing several members to flee. At least six suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds, fleeing into a nearby river.
A search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition, believed to have been used by the gang in previous operations.
The police said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks and tackle violent crime across Rivers State. A manhunt has since been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
