Residents of Okeme Street in Bariga area of Lagos are raising concerns over alleged waste management irregularities involving a landlord accused of evading official sanitation payments.
The complaints centre on the landlord of Number One Okeme Street, identified as Mr. Lateef Lasisi, whom residents accused of bypassing approved waste disposal procedures for years.
According to residents, the landlord allegedly failed to make proper payments to accredited PSP operators and instead relied on unofficial arrangements with some sanitation workers and supervisors.
They claimed the practice has caused repeated disputes among tenants and disrupted regular refuse evacuation within the community.
Some residents further alleged that Mr. Lasisi had been cutting corners by allegedly bribing some LAWMA officials instead of paying through approved government channels.
The residents are now calling on the Lagos State Government and the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, to investigate the allegations and demand evidence of waste disposal payments made over the past two years.
They also expressed fears that the growing refuse situation could trigger environmental and public health challenges, especially among children in the densely populated area.
While Mr. Lasisi reportedly defended the practice, insisting that directly tipping sanitation workers was preferable, several tenants disagreed, maintaining that waste disposal payments should be handled transparently through legitimate channels to guarantee proper refuse evacuation and accountability.
