The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Olayiwola Fatai, has called for urgent community collaboration to tackle the growing threat of cultism and gang-related violence in Orile-Agege and surrounding areas.
Fatai made the call during his inaugural familiarisation tour and security town hall meeting at the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, where he expressed deep concern over the deterioration of security in a community he described as his home.
He recalled a time when residents could move freely without fear, lamenting that the current wave of killings and criminal activities has disrupted peace and created anxiety among residents.
The police commissioner stressed that security cannot be achieved by law enforcement alone, urging residents to work closely with the police by providing timely and credible information on criminal elements operating within their neighbourhoods.
He noted that the Command is adopting intelligence-driven policing backed by strong community engagement, adding that similar strategies have successfully reduced cult-related crimes in areas like Mushin.
Fatai warned that the police would no longer tolerate criminality, declaring that individuals involved in cultism and other violent offences would be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.
He also appealed to parents, community leaders and landlords to take responsibility by guiding youths away from crime and refusing to shelter known offenders.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Akinola Idowu, described the security situation as a serious challenge requiring collective action from government, security agencies and residents.
He disclosed that the council is strengthening its local security framework through joint operations, intelligence gathering and partnerships aimed at restoring safety in the area.
Other stakeholders, including traditional rulers and community leaders, pledged their support for the police, expressing readiness to work together to eliminate cultism and ensure lasting peace in Orile-Agege.
