The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a truck driver following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Badagry Expressway.
The tragic incident occurred around the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University on the main carriageway of the expressway.
According to preliminary findings by LASTMA, the heavily-loaded bucket truck was reportedly speeding from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when it struck and killed a pedestrian.
The agency stated that instead of stopping after the collision, the driver allegedly continued driving along the corridor.
In an attempt to stop the fleeing truck, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another individual, reportedly pursued the vehicle. However, the truck driver allegedly rammed into the motorcycle during the chase, killing the motorcyclist instantly, while the second rider escaped unhurt.
Officials of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team were said to have responded swiftly to the scene, where they evacuated the body of the motorcyclist trapped beneath the truck.
The driver was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to security operatives at the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation.
Authorities disclosed that the remains of the deceased motorcyclist were evacuated by FRSC officials, while the body of the pedestrian was released to family members who arrived at the scene.
Both the truck and the damaged motorcycle were also moved to the police post pending the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and described the accident as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving.
He urged truck drivers and other motorists to obey speed regulations and traffic safety measures to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening traffic surveillance, emergency response operations, and collaboration with security agencies to improve road safety across the state.
